Bristlenose Pleco Care Guide, Tank Mates, Breeding, Aquarium Set-Up
A reliable, enjoyable aquarium fish perfect for community aquariums
Species Info:
Bristlenose Plecos (Ancistrus cirrhosus) are a popular aquarium fish known for its algae-eating habits and unique appearance. They are smaller than most other species of pleco, reaching only 4-6 inches. This species got its name from the whiskers around the mouths of adult fish. Whiskers are much more prominent and visible in male fish.
These fish are native to the Amazon Basin in South America. With proper care, genetics, and water quality, Bristlenose Plecos can reach their expected lifespan of 4-5 years. Some have reported for their plecos to live much longer!
Aquarium Set-Up & Care
Below you will find important information on how to ensure your plecos thrive under your care
Ideal Water Parameters for Bristlenose Plecos
Temperature: 72-82 °F (22-28 °C)
pH: 6.5-7.8
Ammonia, Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: No more than 5 ppm
Hardness: About 3-15° for both gH and kH
Tank Size:
Similarly to other pleco species, Bristlenose Plecos often produce a lot of waste that can foul water rapidly when overfed or living in an insufficient tank volume. We recommend keeping a single pleco within a community aquarium in no less than 20 gallons.
Diet:
Bristlenose Plecos are omnivorous and are well known for their algae eating habits. This species consumes diatoms, biofilm, and green dust algae. To ensure that your plecos receive a complete diet, you should offer sinking bottom feeder pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables such as spinach, green beans, and zucchini. We also recommend adding live plants to your bristlenose aquarium. Plants allow additional biofilm and sometimes your pleco will consume the dying or dead portions of your plants!
Social Group & Behavior:
Bristlenose plecos are a peaceful species that can live solitary (alone) or in a group. Males are territorial. For a 20 gallon, it is best to keep one single pleco and add 10 gallons for every additional pleco to ensure that they have ample space and biofilm to graze on. We recommend only one male per tank unless the aquarium is at least 40 gallons in volume for ample territory for males.
For ample biofilm growth and presence within your aquarium, we strongly recommend providing plenty of rocks and driftwood for your plecos. Male plecos will also use hardscape as a territorial marker.
Tank Mates:
Bristlenose plecos are a peaceful species that can coexist with many different species of fish. They are even safe with a lot of shrimp!

Breeding Bristlenose Plecos
Breeding Bristlenose Plecos is very enjoyable and an easy fish to breed with the right aquarium!
To breed Bristlenose Plecos, complete the following steps below:
1) Have one male and at least one female pleco
2) Have a reserved aquarium at least 20 gallons in size with plenty of rocks, driftwood, and at least one Breeding Cave. Most pleco breeding caves are ceramic, but with this product, you may be lucky! We also have had plecos breed in an artificial triceratops skull decoration...
3) Make sure you have a great, efficient aquarium filter to ensure that water quality stays optimal like a sponge filter.
4) Maintain a temperature between 75-85 °F and a water pH between 6.5 and 7.5
5) Consistently feed your adult plecos bottom feeder wafers and blanched vegetables
6) The male pleco will remain in his chosen cave and try to court females to enter it. Once they copulate and produce eggs, the male pleco will protect and aerate them to ensure they develop properly. Do not be concerned if you do not see the male leave the cave.
7) Eggs typically hatch within a week after they are laid. Once the fry are free swimming, they should be separated from their parents to prevent being potentially eaten.
8) Feed the pleco fry blanched vegetables, spirulina, algae wafers, and fish fry food. It is crucial to ensure that water quality remains optimal for their growth. Water changes should occur more often.
To breed a specific morph/strain of bristlenose pleco, it is best to select parents of the same genetic phenotypes like albino, wild-type (normal), super red, calico, or blue eyed lemon.
